Lap Swimming Etiquette
The great thing about swimming is that it can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. As a community facility, AquaZone is a place for everyone. To help ensure all swimmers have a positive pool experience, it’s helpful to understand lap swimming etiquette.
Entering the pool
Enter the water feet first at the shallow end of the pool. If another swimmer is approaching the wall, wait until they have turned and started their next lap.
Choosing the right lane
Look at the signs for each lane, and pick a speed. If you are getting passed often by most of the other swimmers, move to a slower lane. If you are passing most of the other swimmers, move to a faster lane.
Unless otherwise signposted, you should only swim freestyle in the fast lanes. Short drills that involve other strokes are ok.
Keeping things moving
If there are two swimmers in the lane, you may choose to swim up and back on the same side. This is known as split lane swimming.
If there are three or more swimmers in a lane, circle in a clockwise direction (keep your right arm closest to the lane rope). This is known as circle swimming.
Leave space when pushing off
It’s always a good idea to leave 5-10 seconds before pushing off the wall behind another swimmer
Tap to pass
If you need to pass the swimmer in front of you, tap them on the foot to let them know. Then pass them on the inside of the lane.
If someone taps your foot, don’t stop swimming. Slow your stroke and move towards the lane rope as much as possible. If you are near the turn, yield to them at the wall.
